Men’s Tennis Notebook: North Central Holds First as Carthage Rises in Rankings

NAPERVILLE — As the spring season continues, the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) men’s tennis standings have begun to take shape through a combination of winning streaks and movement in the national rankings. 
 
North Central has maintained control of the top position in the conference, while Carthage has advanced in the national polls.
 
Cardinals Control the Court: North Central Sets a Scorching Pace
North Central extended its winning streak to eight consecutive duals, highlighted by three 7-0 victories against conference opponents. The Cardinals opened the weekend with a doubleheader sweep in Naperville, defeating Carroll 7-0 before recording the same result against Elmhurst later in the day. 
 
Against Carroll, North Central secured the doubles point with 6-1 wins at all three positions before carrying that momentum into singles play. Rafael Lessa earned a three-set victory at the number four position, recovering from a first-set loss to win 6-7, 6-4, 1-0 (10-8). In the match against Elmhurst, North Central benefited from forfeits and limited its opponents to two total games in contested matches. 
 
The weekend concluded with a 7-0 win over Illinois Wesleyan in Bloomington. Across the three matches, North Central won all 27 individual contests without dropping a point.
 
Firebirds in Flight: Carthage Ascends the National Rankings
Carthage moved up nine positions to No. 31 in the Division III national rankings following a series of victories that improved its overall record to 15-3. The Firebirds opened conference play with a 7-0 win at Augustana, securing the doubles point with victories at the first and third positions. 
 
In singles play, the match was clinched at the number five spot with a 7-5, 6-3 result. Carthage also recorded a 7-0 non-conference victory over Lawrence, with Linus Bangert posting two 6-0 wins at number three singles.
 
Wottgen’s Winning Ways: Sophomore Claims Top Conference Honor
North Central sophomore Philipp Wottgen was named the CCIW Men’s Tennis Student-Athlete of the Week on Tuesday after posting a 3-0 record at number one singles without dropping a set. His performances included straight-set victories against Carroll, Elmhurst and Illinois Wesleyan. 
 
Wottgen also paired with Jack Briggs at number two doubles to earn three wins, allowing just one game combined. The recognition marks the sixth time this season a North Central player has received the weekly award. Previous honorees from the conference include teammates from North Central, Illinois Wesleyan and Carthage.
 
Thunder Strikes: Wheaton Opens Conference Play with a Sweep
Wheaton began its conference schedule with a pair of 7-0 victories during a homestand. The Thunder closed non-conference play with a win over Concordia Chicago, sweeping all three doubles matches and securing all singles points. Sam Schutz recorded his first win of the season at number six singles in a tiebreak decision. 
 
Wheaton followed with a 7-0 conference-opening win over Elmhurst. The Thunder secured multiple points by default and added straight-set wins in contested matches, including 6-0, 6-0 results at several positions.
 
Viking Voyage: Augustana Finds Success on the Road
Augustana recorded a 7-0 road victory over Elmhurst to improve to 4-8 overall and 1-1 in conference play. The Vikings secured the doubles point with wins at the first and second positions, along with a walkover at number three. 
 
In singles play, Augustana continued its strong performance, earning straight-set victories at multiple positions while adding additional points via walkovers.
 
Standings Check: North Central Leads the Pack
The conference standings are led by North Central at 5-0 in league play and 12-6 overall. Wheaton follows at 1-0, while Carthage, Millikin, Carroll and Augustana are each 1-1 in conference competition. Illinois Wesleyan is 0-1, and Elmhurst is 0-5 in league matches. 
 
Individually, Carthage’s Francisco Silveira is ranked No. 18 in the ITA Central Region singles rankings with a 14-4 overall record.
 
Future Forecast: Upcoming Slates and Key Matchups
The conference schedule continues with several upcoming matches that will impact standings and postseason seeding. Illinois Wesleyan travels to Carroll and Millikin visits Carthage, both matches scheduled for 4 p.m. Friday. 
 
Saturday’s schedule includes multiple conference matchups, followed by a Sunday contest between Augustana and North Central.
