NAPERVILLE — Illinois Wesleyan senior Michael Spitzer was named the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) Men’s Golf Student-Athlete of the Week on Wednesday. Spitzer earned the award after winning the individual title at the Cochran Collegiate, held last Monday and Tuesday at Colonial Country Club in Cordova, Tenn.
Spitzer opened the 54-hole event with a five-under-par 67 and followed with an even-par 72 to take a four-stroke lead into the final round. In windy conditions on the final 18 holes, Spitzer carded a 77 to finish the tournament at even-par 216 and claim a two-stroke victory over teammate Pablo Castro. The title was the third of his collegiate career.
His finish helped IWU secure its third team title of the season. The Titans posted a team score of 886 and finished 29 strokes ahead of host Rhodes College.
