The CCIW Women's Tennis Notebook: Augustana and Wheaton Stay Unbeaten

NAPERVILLE, Ill. - The battle for the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin women’s tennis regular season title is heating up as most teams have completed half of their conference matches or will this week. As the title race reaches its midpoint Augustana College and Wheaton College remain undefeated in league play. 

Carthage College follows the two undefeated squads holding a record of 2-1. The Firebirds were previously among the undefeated group of teams, but fell to Augustana, 5-2. Wheaton and Carthage are set to play Wednesday afternoon, as the Firebirds look to keep their title hope alive against the undefeated Thunder. Millikin University hosts North Park University and aims to grab its first win of the season. 

On Friday, Augustana will host North Park, while Wheaton will face Illinois Wesleyan University. Sunday afternoon features a matchup between North Park and Carroll University.  

CCIW women’s tennis student-athletes turned in several strong performances across Intercollegiate Tennis Association regional competition over the weekend, including a pair of singles championships at the Gustie Invite portion of the weekend. 

Carthage College’s Valentina Huesca captured the Draw 10 singles title and teamed with Jordan Miller to reach a doubles championship match, while Miller also advanced to the semifinals of Draw 8. Niki Manojlovic and Kamila Dobija reached the third round of the ITA doubles bracket, with Dobija also earning a singles win.

Carroll University’s Mia Franke won four matches to claim the Draw 8 singles championship, while Madison Siminski advanced to the semifinals of Draw 6. Natasa Pupovac and Kate Trifilio reached the round of 16 in doubles, with Trifilio also earning a singles victory. Nawal Souki added a singles win and teamed with Siminski for a doubles victory.

At Kalamazoo College, North Central College’s Kate Herlihy advanced to the consolation semifinals, while Anais Gerard reached the consolation quarterfinals. Berkley Klarich and Meghan McSweeney each earned wins in the main singles draw, and Klarich and Herlihy added a doubles victory.

Illinois Wesleyan University’s Amber Ehrlich earned two consolation victories to reach the quarterfinals, while North Park University’s Alexandra Pugachova advanced in the main singles draw with a straight-set victory.

Augustana College’s Anna-Maria Huebel and Maripaz Ramirez each earned singles wins, while Huebel teamed with Colleen Larry for a doubles victory.

CCIW Players of the Week

Carroll’s Kate Trifilio earned the first CCIW Women’s Tennis Player of the Week honor of the season after helping lead the Pioneers past North Central. Trifilio went undefeated with victories at No. 1 doubles and No. 2 singles, clinching the team match with a three-set singles win.

Carthage’s Niki Manojlovic followed with CCIW Student-Athlete of the Week honors after helping the Firebirds to their 5-1 victory over Carroll. Manojlovic went undefeated at No. 1 doubles and No. 1 singles, earning a 6-2 doubles win before adding a 6-2, 6-3 singles victory.

During week 3, Augustana’s Casillas Velasco earned singles victories against both the Pioneers and Firebirds while also picking up doubles wins in each match. The freshman’s 4-0 week helped Augustana remain unbeaten in CCIW play at 4-0.
