CLAREMONT, Calif. – A total of 18 individuals and four relay teams from the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) were named outdoor track & field all-Americans at the 2012 NCAA Outdoor National Championships this weekend.
In the men’s team standings, North Central placed fifth (32.33 points), followed by Augustana’s (24 points) seventh place finish and Carthage’s 16th place finish (16 points). North Park and Wheaton tied for 77th with one point each.
In the women’s team standings, Illinois Wesleyan finished ninth (19 points), while North Central tied for 63rd (3 points), Carthage tied for 68th (2 points) and Wheaton tied for 73rd (one point).
The Cardinals dominated the men’s pole vault competition as Peter Geraghty (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park-River Forest) (17-8 ½), John Wood (Palatine, Ill./Fremd) (17-6 ½) and Josh Winder (Joliet, Ill./Plainfield Central) (16-6 ¾) took the top three spots on Saturday. Also on Saturday, the 4x400-meter relay team of Jonathan Caron (Romeoville, Ill./H.S.), Dionte Hackler (Schaumburg, Ill./H.S.), Marlen Hamilton (Schaumburg, Ill./Hoffman Estates) and Jon Howard (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South) placed third with a time of 3:10.99.
Zach Heerspink (Holland, Mich./Hamilton) finished in a three-way tie for eighth place in the high jump (6-8) on Friday, while Dan Kerley (Vienna, Ill./H.S.) finished seventh in the 10,000-meter run (30:56.71) on Thursday.
Augustana’s relay teams shined during the championship, beginning with the 4x400 relay squad of Greg Patton (Bloomington, Ill./H.S.), Dan Doubet (Galesburg, Ill./H.S.), David Voland (Batavia, Ill./H.S.) and Alex Rindone (Geneva, Ill./Marmion) who placed second with a time of 3:10.70. The 4x100 team of David Devore (Midland, Mich./H.S.), Patton, Keith Cline (Byron, Ill./H.S.) and Rindone finished fourth (41.06). Rindone also finished fifth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.31 while Voland was third in the 400-meter hurdles (51.60).
On Friday, Augustana’s Adam Myers (Dixon, Ill./H.S.) placed eighth in the hammer (194-1).
Carthage’s Trevor James (Maywood, Ill./Chicago-Hope Academy) won a national title in the high jump, finishing with a height of 6-10 ¼, while Greg Raimondi (Harwood Heights, Ill./Norridge-Ridgewood) was third in the hammer (199-4).
North Park’s David Johansson (Ahus, Sweden/Soderportskolan) finished eighth in the javelin (208-2), while Wheaton’s Luke Vance (South Hamilton, Mass./Hamilton-Wenham Regional) was eighth in the 800-meter run (1:51.08).
On the women’s side, Illinois Wesleyan’s 4x400 relay team of Lauren Alpert (Park Ridge, Ill./Maine South), Jessica Christy (Springfield, Ill./Sacred Heart Griffin), Tara Clemens (Bloomington, Ill./H.S.) and Lauren Rock (Madison, Wis./James Madison Memorial) placed second with a time of 3:40.95. Alpert also placed eighth in the 400-meter dash (56.09) and fifth in the long jump (19-2). Clemens placed sixth in the 800-meter run (2:09.24).
Illinois Wesleyan’s Rachael Williams (Shorewood, Ill./Minooka) took sixth in the 10,000-meter run (36:33.36) on Thursday, while North Central’s Brianna Tolliver (Las Vegas, Nevada/Sierra Vista) was sixth in the javelin (140-8).
Carthage’s Sarah Thompson (Byron, Ill./H.S.) placed seventh in the heptathlon (4,698 points), while Wheaton’s Renee Bettinger (Richfield, Ohio/Revere) finished eighth in the 100-meter dash (12.02).
