NAPERVILLE – Aurora freshman Alexis Janiak and North Central senior Yelena Makoyed are the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Co-Women’s Wrestling Student-Athlete of the Week, according to an announcement from the conference office Tuesday afternoon.
Janiak, a freshman from Plainfield, Ill., earned weekly honors from the league for the second time this season after putting up a 4-0 record and winning the North Central College Invitational at 130 pounds. She outscored her opponents 44-1 during the day, including an 11-1 semifinal win over two-time defending NCWWC national champion Cameron Guerin of McKendree.
Makoyed represented Team USA at the World Cup over the weekend. There, she defeated reigning World Champion and 2021 Olympic bronze medalist Yasemin Adar of Turkey to seal the dual meet victory for Team USA over the UWW All-Stars. After trailing early, Makoyed came back to take a 7-4 lead before pinning Adar in the second period. Adar is the second-ranked wrestler in the most recent UWW world rankings, where Makoyed was ranked 15th.
