NAPERVILLE – Julia Babinec of North Central won two hurdles races last Friday and Carroll’s Vanessa Uitenbroek won a trio of throwing events to secure College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Women’s Outdoor Track & Field Student-Athlete of the Week accolades.
Babinec sprinted to a win in the 100-meter hurdles in 14.15 seconds at the First Chance Invitational last Friday in Naperville. The Zeeland, Mich. native was also victorious in the 400-meter hurdles, winning in 1:07.83. Her effort came in her first-ever 400-meter race. Babinec also teamed up with Marcedes Jackson, Denise Partee and Lindsey Novak in the 4x100 relay for a second-place finish with a time of 47.78 seconds.
At the St. Norbert College Twilight last Thursday, Uitenbroek collected victories in a trio of throwing events – the discus, the hammer throw and the shot put. All of her marks were a career best, while her throw of 13.32 meters in the shot put is the sixth-best throw in Division III this spring.
