ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Powered by victories in four different events and four other runner-up performances, defending College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Men’s Outdoor Track & Field champion North Central made it six titles in a row after earning 167 points to secure another team title on Saturday in Rock Island, Ill.
Braden Nicholson was the top performer in the 1,500 meters on Friday, winning the race in 3:53.76. That performance allowed Nicholson to claim the CCIW Elite 26 award, modeled after the NCAA's Elite 90 program and presented to the student-athlete who excels academically and athletically at the conference level in each of the CCIW's 26 sponsored sports.
Elsewhere for the Cardinals, Max Svienty swept the 5,000 meters (14:53.96) and the 10,000 meters (30:12.44). NCCs coaching staff, headed by Gabe Rivera, was voted CCIW Coaching Staff of the Meet on Saturday night.
Illinois Wesleyan, which placed third in the team rankings with 125 points, saw Evan Lowder win the Track Athlete of the Meet award and Adam Beasley earn the First-Year Student-Athlete of the Week award. Lowder ran the winning time in 200 meters in 21.33 seconds and also won the 400 meters in 47.67 seconds. Beasley was the winner in both the high jump (2.00 meters) and long jump (7.44 meters).
Another big winner was Joseph White of Carthage, who topped the field in both the shot put (18.98 meters) and discus (58.54 meters) to win the Field Athlete of the Meet award for the second consecutive season. Carthage’s team total of 127 was good enough for second place in the team standings.
