CCIW Trio Secures Academic All-America® Status From CSC

AUSTIN, Texas – Three College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) men’s track & field student-athletes added to their list of accolades last Wednesday when each were named to the 2023-24 Academic All-America® Team by College Sports Communicators.

Carroll’s Steven Hermsen was named to the First Team as one of only two Division III student-athletes on the 2023-24 team to be selected for a fourth time. He was joined by first-time honorees Max Svienty of North Central (First Team) and Jake Shumaker of Millikin (Third Team).

Hermsen, a physical therapy graduate student with a perfect 4.00 cumulative grade-point average, is now a four-time CSC Academic All-American®. He joins MIT’s Kenneth Wei as the only four-time honorees. The two-time CCIW Men’s Student-Athlete of the Year finished his career last spring as a three-time national champion in the outdoor discus.

Svienty gave the CCIW two selections on the First Team. A senior elementary education major with a 3.88 GPA, Svienty was a third-place finisher at the 2023 Division III Cross Country Championship. He also ran the eighth-fastest 10,000-meter run in Division III history, qualifying for both that race and the 5,000 meters at the 2024 NCAA Outdoor Championships.

Shumaker is a senior with a 3.81 GPA in computer science. He had two top-10 finishes at the 2024 NCAA Indoor and Outdoor Championships, including an eighth-place showing in the 800 meters at the Indoor Championships.
