Petzinger and Jones Win Titles, Cardinals Take Second

CORALVILLE, Iowa - After two long days in Xtream Arena, the North Central College women's wrestling team finished the 2025 NCWWC National Championships as the national runner-up. Sydney Petzinger (117) and Amani Jones (124) earned national champion status in their respective weight classes. North Central had 12 wrestlers earn All-American honors.
 
The University of Iowa won its second consecutive national title with 201.5 points. The Cardinals finished in second with 181 points, followed by McKendree University (158.5), Grand Valley State University (158.5), and King University (92.5).
 
Second-ranked Petzinger opened her day with a 10-1 decision win over fourth-ranked Karissa Tunrwall from Emmanuel University in the semifinals of the 117-weight class. Petzinger met third-ranked Clare Boone (King University) in the finals. Petzinger brought the energy from the very beginning and fed off the North Central fans. Petzinger conquered Booe with a 10-6 decision. Petzinger took her first national championship and earned All-American honors for the fourth time in her career.
 
"My moms have done everything for me since I started wrestling when I was seven. I owe it all to them," said Petzinger.
 
In the 124-weight class, top-ranked Jones sent herself to her second consecutive NCWWC finals by defeating fifth-ranked Aspen Blasko from Grand Valley State University in the semifinals. Jones took on third-ranked Shelby Moore (McKendree University) in the finals. Jones held her head high, kept her pace, and wrestled her shots in the finals. Jones shut down Moore with a 5-0 decision. Jones is a back-to-back national champion and has earned All-American honors every season of her career.
 
"I am really excited I got to end my final season with a win in front of my teammates after all the support they've given me," said Jones.
 
Top-ranked Sara Sterner (131) stood her ground in the semifinals against second-ranked Alexandra Szkotnicki (McKendree), defeating her in a nail-biting 8-4 decision. In the finals, Sterner faced off against McKendree's third-ranked Alexis Janiak. Sterner fought till the very end of the match, hitting Janiak with a massive takedown, but was only awarded two points. The Cardinal coaches challenged a call as time ran out but were ultimately denied the turnover. Sterner finished as the national runner-up and earned All-American honors for the third time.
 
Third-ranked Bella Mir took on former teammate and Iowa wrestler second-ranked Reese Larramendy in the 145-semifinals. The ranked matchup caught the eyes of everyone in the area, creating an energetic atmosphere. Mir showed Larramendy that it's better to be a Cardinal than a Hawkeye by defeating Larramendy with a 6-3 decision. In the finals, Mir faced another former teammate, top-ranked Kilty Macey (Iowa), on the big stage. In what was one of the most electric matches of the weekend, Mir fought to the very end. Time ran down before Mir could score again, falling to Larramendy by a heartbreaking 6-3 decision. In her very first NCWWC National Championship, Mir finished as the 2025 national runner-up and earned All-American honors for the first time.
 
In the 110 class semifinals, No. 4 Kendra Ryan suffered heartbreak, falling to top-ranked Sage Mortimer (Grand Valley State) by a technical fall (10-0). Fortunately, in the consolation semifinals, Ryan bounced back to defeat New Jersey City University's Izabella Frezzo in a tough 8-6 decision. Ryan fed off the crowd's energy in the third-place match, causing an upset on the mat; fourth-ranked Ryan defeated second-ranked Ava Bayless (Iowa) with a 4-2 decision. Ryan took home a third-place finish and All-American honors. Ryan has finished with All-American honors for four consecutive seasons.
 
The 138-pound weight class, Taylor Graveman, fell in two consecutive matches to decisions before persevering in the fifth-place match. Graveman fell to fourth-ranked Haylie Jaffe from McKendree in the semifinals (5-1) and Iowa's fifth-ranked Nanea Estrella in the consolation semifinals (12-4). Graveman fought against Presbyterian's second-ranked Paige Wehrmeitster, edging her out with a 12-8 decision. Graveman earned a fifth-place finish and All-American honors for the first time in her career.
 
Second-ranked Shenita Lawson (180) took on third-ranked Sabrina Nauss (Grand Valley State) in a tough semifinal match. Unfortunately, Lawson ultimately fell to Nauss in a heartbreaking 19-17 decision. Lawson defeated teammate and fourth-ranked wrestler of the weight class, Brittyn Corbishley, with an 8-5 decision in the consolation semifinals but fell to fifth-ranked Naomi Simon from Iowa by a decision (9-0). Lawson finished the Championship in fourth place and earned All-American honors.
 
Despite her loss yesterday, fourth-ranked Corbishley continued to do her thing, pinning everyone in sight in the 180 division. Corbishley pinned Jade Herzer (University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point) in one minute and three seconds in the consolation round before pinning tenth-ranked Lydia Krauss (McKendree) in only 58 seconds. In the consolation semifinals, Corbishley fell to fellow Cardinal Lawson (No. 2) in an 8-5 decision and entered the fifth-place bout. Corbishley pinned Lock Haven University's Azariah Moore to take fifth place and earn All-American honors. Corbishley has earned All-American honors for three consecutive seasons.
 
Sixth-ranked Traeh Haynes (207) started her day off with a pin over eighth-ranked Simon Fraser University's Julia Richey (5:08) and moved on to defeat Greensboro College's Destiny Vaughans with a 10-0 technical fall. Haynes fell to third-ranked Lindenwood University's Sara Lake by a heartbreaking 3-1 decision in the consolation semifinals. In the fifth-place match, Haynes pinned Maria Aiono (Presbyterian College) in one minute and 46 seconds. Haynes finished fifth in the Championship with All-American honors. Corbishley has earned All-American honors for the third straight season.
 
In the 103-pound weight class, Maddie Avila defeated Colorado Mesa University's sixth-ranked Jennesis Martinez before falling to Schreiner University's seventh-ranked Odelia Lopez in a 2-0 decision. Avila fought back in the seventh-place match, defeating tenth-ranked Mia Zuniga (King University) with a 12-4 decision. Avila finished her season by placing seventh and earning All-American honors for the third consecutive year. Also in the 103 division was ninth-ranked Brianne Graves. Unfortunately, Graves fell to eight-ranked King University's Avery Kibelbek in the fourth round of the consolations to end her stint at the championships.
 
Seventh-ranked Sydney Perry (145) defeated fellow CCIW member and Augustana College wrestler Aine Moffit with a dominating 10-0 technical fall in round four of the consolation bracket. Perry fell to fifth-ranked Madeline Kubicki of Presbyterian by a pin. In the seventh-place match, Perry fell to McKendree's sixth-ranked Savannah Gomez by a 10-0 technical fall. Perry finished her first season, taking eighth place and earning All-American honors for the first time.
 
In the 160-pound weight class, sixth-ranked Tiera Jimerson defeated Colorado Mesa's eight-ranked Gretchen Donally with a 2-1 decision. Jimerson fell to Nyla Burgess (Gannon University) by a 5-4 decision in round five of the consolation bracket before falling to Dubuque University's Alexandra Hofrichter by a pin in the seventh-place match. Jimerson took home eighth place and the third All-American honors in her career.
 
North Central finished the season with a 13-1 dual record and a perfect College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) record (4-0). The Cardinals won the NCWWC Region IV Championship and earned national runner-up status for the second consecutive year. Norton won the NWCA Women's Coach of the National Tournament for the fourth consecutive year and for the second straight year Corbishley won the award for the most falls in the least amount of time.
