The CCIW Women’s Soccer Notebook: A Vital Week Ahead

A trio of teams have separated from the pack, but lots is still to be decided as the conference season enters its penultimate week of play.

NAPERVILLE, Ill. - With all the teams in CCIW women's soccer now having played half or more of their conference schedules, a hierarchy has started to emerge in the table. Unbeaten North Central is alone in first place, but could be matched by Illinois Wesleyan who has a game in hand and is the only team to snatch a point from the Cardinals this season. Wheaton continues to come on strong in the middle portion of the season and is currently alone in second place. Below that group are a number of teams still vying not only for a berth to the CCIW Tournament, but for a home match once they get there. The picture should get clearer this week with four conference matches on both Saturday and Wednesday.

The match of the day on Saturday might be Elmhurst's trip to face Wheaton at 4:30 p.m. That is the first in a three-match closing stretch to the regular season for the Thunder against the rest of the teams currently in the top four in the league and both teams will be eager for the opportunity to come out of the match with three points to their name.

Regional Rankings/Statistical Leaders
No change in rankings this week as North Central continues to be ranked fourth in Region VIII and Illinois Wesleyan is slotted into fifth in the region.

A nine-goal outburst from Elmhurst on Wednesday night in a non-conference victory over Cornell (IA) has lifted the Bluejays into a tie with Millikin for the lead in goals scored this season with 36. Elmhurst is also getting it done on the defensive end, allowing a league-low nine goals this season (a goals-against average of just 0.64). The Bluejays have a truly remarkable stat going this season in that all 10 of their wins so far have come via shutout, while they've been outscored, 9-2, in their four defeats.

While Millikin's Izzy Jones may have an insurmountable lead in the CCIW for goals scored this season (14 in 14 matches), the race for second is a tight one with Elmhurst's Lauren Nevins tied with Illinois Wesleyan's Ava Mapes with eight. North Central's Reese Anderson has also come on strong with seven, including a league-best six in five CCIW matches. Nevins in particular has made her goals count, with five of her eight going down as the game-winning goal for the Bluejays. IWU teammates Ellen Dahlquist and Taylor Haun are tied for the lead in assists this season with six apiece.

Carroll's Ava Lewandowski maintains her conference lead in goals-against average (0.73) and save percentage (.833) through another week of action. Lewandowski is being challenged by Elmhurst's Erin Fitzharris in goals-against average, as the Bluejay keeper is down to 0.79 allowed per match, and in save percentage by Augustana's Sara Schinker (.824).
