Baseball Notebook: Spring Trips Wind Down, Conference Race Looms

NAPERVILLE — The 2026 baseball season reached a transition point this week as College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) programs neared the end of spring-break travel.

Thursday marked the official start of conference play, closing the door on several extended trips to Florida and Arizona and beginning the next phase of the spring schedule. As teams return to northern venues, early-season statistical trends have begun to take shape across the league.

Victory in the Windy City: Vikings Claim Conference Opener
Conference play opened Thursday at the Holmgren Athletic Complex, where North Park recorded a 4-1 victory over North Central to move to 1-0 in league action. The game remained scoreless through four innings as North Central starter Payton Diaz held the Vikings without a hit during that stretch. North Park broke through in the fifth inning when Vinnie Marvucic and Fabian Cruz each singled, setting up sophomore second baseman Kupono Akaka for a two-run double down the left-field line.

North Park’s pitching staff and defense preserved the lead from there. Jackson Nuese worked 6.0 innings and allowed no earned runs while striking out four to collect his third win of the season. The Vikings stranded 12 North Central runners during the contest and also received a key defensive play from junior Noa Fujitani, who made a diving catch in the outfield to help limit a Cardinals threat. Ethan Condit handled the late innings, allowing one hit and striking out four over 2.0 innings to earn his second save of the season and the ninth of his career. Taylor Joseph added two hits and an RBI, while Reyn Matsuzaki contributed a run-scoring single.

Milestone in Moline: Coach Wallace Reaches Eight-Hundred
One of the week’s most notable results came last Friday at Swanson Stadium, where Augustana defeated Eureka 19-0 in seven innings. The win marked the 800th career victory at Augustana for head coach Greg Wallace and the 877th collegiate win of his career.

Augustana provided early support with a 10-run first inning and continued to add on throughout the game. Zach Quimby finished 3-for-3 with seven RBI, including a grand slam and two doubles. On the mound, Aidan Conners threw 6.0 hitless innings, striking out nine and issuing three walks. The bullpen allowed Eureka’s lone hit in the seventh inning. AJ Macak also contributed three hits and scored four runs as the Vikings added another strong result to their non-conference resume.

Extra Innings in the Panhandle: Pioneers Battle in Pensacola
Carroll spent part of the week in Pensacola, Fla., where the Pioneers dropped an 11-10 decision to Edgewood in 10 innings on March 11 at Blue Wahoos Stadium. Although the result went against Carroll, the game featured several late offensive responses and a five-run eighth inning that briefly put the Pioneers in front.

During that eighth-inning rally, Eddie Synek and Leo Matuga each drove in runs before Dalen Lamberson delivered a two-run double. Lamberson finished with three RBI. Carroll also rallied again in the ninth inning, with Gabriel Lee lifting a sacrifice fly and Joey Appino adding a run-scoring single to force extra innings. The Pioneers drew 11 walks in the game and were active on the bases, led by Evan Becker with four stolen bases and Synek with two. Edgewood pushed across the deciding run in the 10th, but Carroll’s offensive output provided another indication of the depth in its lineup as the team transitioned back north.

Mastery on the Mound: League Leaders in Run Prevention
As conference play begins, Millikin and Augustana have established strong early profiles on the mound. Millikin leads the CCIW with a 1.91 team ERA and has limited opponents to a .197 batting average. The Big Blue have also allowed just 27 earned runs, the fewest in the conference. Caleb Akins has been a central figure in that effort, leading the league with 31.2 innings pitched while posting a 1.14 ERA and holding opponents to a .128 batting average.

Among qualified pitchers, Augustana’s Jack Buckale leads the conference with a 0.92 ERA in 19.2 innings. He is followed by Millikin pitchers Akins, Nolan Reiman at 1.17, and Gavin Houchins at 1.56. Augustana’s Chance Carruthers has also been effective, carrying a 1.80 ERA while leading the conference with 37 strikeouts.

Lumber Yard: High-Powered Hitting Leaders
Offensively, Augustana’s Kaileb Hackman has put together one of the conference’s most productive starts. Hackman leads the CCIW with a .537 batting average and a 1.497 OPS. He also tops the conference in hits with 36 and doubles with 10, helping pace a productive Vikings lineup.

North Central’s Caleb Coberley is batting .526, while Wheaton’s Tyler Burr enters the weekend at .459. In runs scored, North Park’s Joe Perona and Augustana’s Riley Hendren share the conference lead with 26 apiece. Carroll’s Brody Ferko has drawn a league-high 16 walks, and Wheaton’s James Scott has been hit by a pitch 18 times. On the bases, Millikin’s Leyton Ivers and Perona are tied for the conference lead with 13 stolen bases. Those performances have helped shape the early offensive identity of the league.

Defense and Discipline: Error-Free Efforts
Millikin has also set the standard defensively, leading the conference with a .973 fielding percentage and just 15 errors through 15 games. Easton Steck has recorded 113 putouts without an error, while Gage Reynolds has added 103 putouts and five caught stealings with a perfect fielding mark as well.

Illinois Wesleyan has been effective in another area, leading the conference with 15 double plays turned. Gage Wolfe has been involved in eight double plays, the most among league players.

The Standings and the Horizon: Looking Toward the Weekend
Following the opening conference contest, North Park sits at 1-0 in league play. Augustana enters the weekend 11-3 overall, while North Park is 9-6.

CCIW baseball action is in full swing as the schedule transitions into a busy weekend starting Friday. The slate features Augustana and Elmhurst continuing their respective spring trips in Florida with matchups against Springfield and Macalester. Conference play also takes center stage Friday afternoon as North Park hosts Carthage at the Holmgren Athletic Complex at 3:30 p.m., while Illinois Wesleyan begins a home series against Wisconsin-Oshkosh. North Central rounds out the Friday schedule by hosting Calvin University in a 6:45 p.m. contest.

The momentum carries into Saturday, highlighted by a conference doubleheader between Millikin and Wheaton starting at 1 p.m.. Carroll will also be in action at home, taking on Wisconsin-River Falls for two games in Waukesha. Non-conference play continues next week with North Park visiting Dominican on Monday and Carthage traveling to Concordia Wisconsin on Tuesday afternoon.
