Men's Track & Field Notebook: Conference Depth on Display Across Multiple Meets

NAPERVILLE — The middle of April has brought several notable performances for College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) men’s outdoor track and field programs. Competition over the past week produced school records, conference-leading marks and nationally ranked results across multiple events. 
 
The meets at the Chicagoland Outdoor Championships, the UW-Platteville Invitational and the Greenville Select featured several of the conference’s top performances of the season, with additional competition scheduled across the region this weekend.
 
Jacob’s Ladder: A Record-Breaking Run in Platteville
Carthage senior Jacob Curulewski turned in one of the conference’s top distance performances last Friday at the UW-Platteville Invitational. Curulewski placed 11th in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 14:13.57, improving his personal best while lowering his own school record. The mark leads the CCIW this season and ranks 13th in NCAA Division III. Curulewski was also recognized as the CCIW Track Student-Athlete of the Week last Wednesday. 
 
Illinois Wesleyan’s Zack Daniel added a career-best time of 15:30.30 in the same event, which ranks fifth in the conference, while North Central freshman Daniel Kasperan finished in 14:26.79 after improving his previous indoor mark by 37 seconds.
 
Spearing the Record Books: A Three-Decade Wait Ends
Illinois Wesleyan senior Gavin Gonzalez posted a significant result in the javelin at the Greenville Select last Saturday. Gonzalez won the event with a throw of 60.87 meters (199' 8"), breaking a 31-year-old program record that had stood since 1995. The mark moved him to the top of the CCIW performance list and ranks 15th in Division III. Gonzalez was named the CCIW Field Student-Athlete of the Week last Wednesday following the performance. 
 
The Titans also received javelin marks from Ashtin Elder at 42.19 meters and Luke Huffaker at 41.36 meters.
 
The Quarter-Mile Quickstep: Parker and Smith Duel for the Lead
The 400-meter dash continues to be one of the conference’s most competitive events. Carthage junior Dylan Parker won the race at the Chicagoland Outdoor Championships in 47.87 seconds, setting a meet record while moving to the top of the CCIW list and to 23rd nationally in Division III. 
 
Carroll senior Brian Smith followed with a school-record time of 48.00 seconds at the Beloit Invitational last Friday. Smith’s performance also broke the facility record and ranks 24th nationally. Carroll recorded a sweep of the event, with Patrick Signore also posting a lifetime-best time.
 
Taking Flight: High Standards and Triple Jumps
Conference competitors also produced several strong results in the jumping events. Wheaton sophomore Ty Bova won the high jump at the Chicagoland Championships with a clearance of 2.03 meters (6' 7.75"), a mark that ranks 12th in Division III this season. Carthage freshman Jack Tilton cleared 1.97 meters last weekend and currently ranks third in the CCIW. In the triple jump, 
 
North Central sophomore Jayden Leise recorded a season-best mark of 14.42 meters (47' 3.75") to finish third at Chicagoland. That mark leads the conference by three inches and ranks 12th nationally. North Park senior Wesley McCloud added a second-place finish in the high jump at the same meet with a clearance of 2.00 meters.
 
Heavy Metal: Dominating the Throwing Rings
The league also continued to show depth in the throwing events. Augustana senior Landon Wierenga won the hammer throw at the UW-Platteville Invitational with a mark of 59.59 meters and also placed fourth in the discus at 46.02 meters. Carthage senior Tyler Rose won the discus at the Chicagoland Championships with a throw of 50.40 meters and added top-five finishes in the hammer throw and shot put with marks of 52.31 meters and 15.21 meters, respectively. 
 
Carroll’s Brady Reusser moved to 28th nationally after a lifetime-best discus mark at the UW-Oshkosh Invitational. North Central sophomore Ben Balboa added a third-place discus finish of 46.58 meters in a 67-competitor field last Saturday.
 
Sprints, Hurdles, and Relay Resilience
North Central and Augustana posted additional results in the sprint, hurdle and relay events. North Central’s Alexander Knight finished fourth in the 100-meter dash finals last Saturday in 10.69 seconds, a time that ranks fifth in program history. Augustana’s AJ Banks placed second in the 110-meter hurdles in 14.61 seconds and fourth in the 400-meter hurdles in 56.14 seconds. 
 
North Central also received a third-place finish in the 110-meter hurdles from Christian Kokot in 15.24 seconds and a second-place result in the 4x400-meter relay. Gabe Parker, Alex Moos, Jake Juneau and Zach Anderson combined for a time of 3:21.17, which ranks second in the CCIW this season. Carthage also recorded a 42.90 mark in the 4x100-meter relay behind Christopher Seals, Landon Voye, Jy'Lique Barnes and Dylan Parker.
 
The Road Ahead: High-Stakes Competition on the Horizon
The conference schedule continues this weekend with several teams competing at multiple sites. Augustana and North Central are scheduled to compete Friday and Saturday at the Augustana Meet of Champions in Rock Island, while Elmhurst and part of the Illinois Wesleyan roster are also set to take part on Saturday. Other members of the Illinois Wesleyan team are competing at the Bryan Clay Invitational in California, which concludes Saturday, in addition to the Gibson Invitational on Saturday. 
 
Carthage and North Park are scheduled to compete at Wheaton’s Don Church Twilight Meet on Saturday. Carroll will split its roster between the Augustana meet and the Wisconsin Lutheran meet, while Millikin is also scheduled to compete at the Augustana Meet of Champions.
