NAPERVILLE — As the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) men’s tennis regular season approaches its conclusion, competition continues to intensify with positioning for the conference tournament and national rankings at stake.
This week’s notebook includes a milestone result in Naperville, movement in the national rankings and an individual performance recognized with weekly honors.
Cardinals Stake Their Claim in Naperville
North Central secured at least a share of the CCIW regular season title for the third consecutive year with a 4-3 victory over Augustana last Sunday. The result extended the Cardinals’ winning streak to nine matches, their longest since the spring of 2024.
Matt Crossland contributed to the early momentum alongside David Vilarroig Martinez with a 6-4 win at No. 3 doubles. The doubles point was ultimately decided at No. 2, where Jack Briggs and Philipp Wottgen recovered from a 5-6 deficit to claim an 8-6 tiebreaker victory.
In singles, Andres Valverde Gonzalez and Rafael Lessa recorded straight-set wins to establish an early advantage. Henry Ros clinched the dual at No. 2 singles with a 6-1, 7-6 result, closing the match on an overhead in the second-set tiebreaker. Augustana secured points in the lower half of the lineup, but North Central maintained its lead to improve to 6-0 in conference play.
Firebirds Feel the Heat of National Recognition
Carthage moved up nine positions to No. 31 in the latest ITA national rankings and followed with two decisive victories. The Firebirds recorded their fourth consecutive shutout last Saturday with a 7-0 win over Illinois Wesleyan, sweeping doubles play and winning all six singles matches in straight sets.
Victor Pimenta posted a 6-0, 6-0 result at No. 5 singles, while Diego Silva secured the team point with a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 2. The performance came one day after a 7-0 victory over Millikin, where the doubles team of Finn Morris and Silva set the tone with a 7-0 result at the top position. Additional singles wins from Ethan Foucheaux and Francisco Silveira completed the sweep. Carthage currently holds a 3-1 conference record and is 17-3 overall.
Garcia’s Grand Slam Week Earns League Honors
Augustana junior Aingeru Garcia was named the CCIW Men’s Tennis Student-Athlete of the Week on Tuesday after compiling a 6-0 record across doubles and singles competition. Competing at No. 1 doubles and No. 6 singles, Garcia contributed to a 5-2 victory over Wheaton with a 6-3 doubles win alongside Jorge Marcelo and a 6-3, 6-3 singles result.
Garcia also recorded a doubles victory in a 7-6 (7) decision against North Central and added two wins in non-conference play against St. Ambrose earlier in the week. Augustana currently sits at 4-2 in league play and remains in contention for a top-three position in the standings.
Court Drama and Badger State Battles
Wheaton earned a 5-2 road victory at Carroll last Tuesday, extending its winning streak against the Pioneers. After Carroll secured the doubles point, Wheaton responded by winning five of six singles matches in straight sets. Andrew Jang, Andrew Winters, David Hill, Ryder Ward, and Toby Schmidt each recorded singles victories.
Millikin and Carroll also met last Saturday, with Millikin earning a 4-3 win. Carroll claimed the doubles point, but Millikin responded in singles play. Gillian Nahum won 6-2, 6-3 at No. 1, while Jorge Aura recovered from a first-set loss to win 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 at No. 2. Harry Masterman secured the deciding point at No. 5 singles.
Vikings Hold Court Against Titans
On Thursday, Augustana hosted Illinois Wesleyan in Rock Island and opened the match by sweeping doubles play. Santiago Diaz and Saman Rezaeyan won 6-1 at No. 2, while Grant Meyers and Santiago Lazo recorded a 6-0 result at No. 3.
In singles, Augustana won five of six matches to win the match, 6-1. Pedro Nunes earned an 8-1 win at No. 1, and Facundo Feldman added a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 5. Illinois Wesleyan’s point came at the top position, where Benjamin Vigneri won in a third-set tiebreaker. The result keeps Augustana in contention for a top-three tournament seed.
Numerical Navigation: Standings and Leaders
North Central leads the conference at 6-0 and has secured at least a share of the regular-season title. Carthage follows at 3-1, while Augustana (4-2) and Wheaton (2-1) remain within range of the top positions. Millikin and Carroll are tied at 2-3, with Illinois Wesleyan (0-4) and Elmhurst (0-5) rounding out the standings.
The Road Ahead: Upcoming Conference Calendar
The regular season continues with a full schedule of matches. Carthage will host Elmhurst on Friday at 4 p.m., while Millikin travels to Greenville for a non-conference match at 12 p.m. On Saturday, Carroll visits Augustana at 1 p.m., North Central travels to WashU at 2:30 p.m., and Wheaton faces Carthage at 4:45 p.m.
Augustana will host Loras on Sunday at 2 p.m. The following week begins with Illinois Wesleyan hosting Elmhurst on Monday at 4:30 p.m. Conference play continues Tuesday with Carthage at Carroll, Illinois Wesleyan at Millikin, and North Central at Wheaton.
