NAPERVILLE — Augustana freshman Jorge Marcelo was named the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Men’s Tennis Student-Athlete of the Week on Tuesday afternoon after helping the Vikings to four dual wins last week.
A native of Madrid, Spain, Marcelo posted a 4-0 record in doubles play and went 3-1 in singles competition during the week.
Playing at No. 1 doubles with Aingeru Garcia, Marcelo contributed to four Augustana wins. The pair opened the week with a 6-4 victory over Millikin and followed with another 6-4 result against Illinois Wesleyan. They later added a 6-1 win over Carroll before closing the stretch with a 6-4 decision over Loras.
Marcelo also competed at No. 2 and No. 3 singles. At No. 3, he earned straight-set wins over Millikin (6-4, 6-3) and Illinois Wesleyan (6-1, 6-1). After moving to No. 2 later in the week, he finished with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Loras.
His results helped Augustana improve to 10-9 overall and 5-2 in CCIW play.
