NAPERVILLE — As the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin moves toward the close of the men’s tennis regular season, the postseason picture continues to take shape.

North Central secured its third consecutive CCIW regular season title during the week, while Carthage added a notable coaching milestone and Augustana strengthened its position in the standings with three victories. With the conference tournament approaching in Bloomington, several teams remain in contention for the final spots in the six-team field.

Cardinal Triumph: North Central Extends Its Reign
North Central claimed the outright CCIW regular season championship for the third straight season with a 5-2 road win over Wheaton on Tuesday at the Wheaton Tennis Center. After losing the doubles point, the Cardinals responded by winning five of the six singles matches to complete conference play with a 7-0 record.

Philipp Wottgen began the turnaround with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles, followed by straight-set victories from David Vilarroig Martinez and Andres Valverde Gonzalez. Ignacio Hernandez Ruiz secured the deciding point with a 7-6, 7-5 win at No. 5 singles.

Earlier in the week, North Central also faced No. 11 WashU, where the Cardinals had a nine-match winning streak snapped in a 7-0 loss.

Bracket Bound: The Final Push for Postseason Position
North Central, Carthage and Augustana have secured the top three seeds for the upcoming conference tournament, while Millikin has also clinched a berth in the six-team field. Wheaton can secure its spot with one win in its final two matches, while Carroll’s bid can be secured with an Illinois Wesleyan loss to Wheaton.

The tournament will be hosted by Illinois Wesleyan and begins Thursday, April 30, with the No. 4 and No. 5 seeds scheduled to play at 10 a.m. and Augustana set to face the No. 6 seed at 2 p.m.

Before then, the regular season concludes with Wheaton traveling to Millikin on Friday at 4 p.m. and visiting Illinois Wesleyan on Saturday at 1 p.m. Augustana will also host Luther in a final non-conference match on Sunday.

A Firebird Century: Milestones and Shutouts in Kenosha
Carthage, ranked No. 29 in the latest ITA Division III national rankings, recorded two conference shutouts and reached several milestones during the week. Head coach Brady Lindsley earned his 900th career coaching victory in a 7-0 sweep of Elmhurst last Friday. His total includes 506 wins with the men’s program and 394 with the women’s program.

Earlier in the week, the Firebirds posted a 7-0 win over Carroll for their seventh consecutive shutout and eighth straight overall victory. In that match, senior Luca Okino collected the 100th win of his career at Carthage when his opponent retired in the second set at No. 5 singles. Carthage finished conference play at 6-1 and will enter the tournament as the No. 2 seed.

Viking Conquests: A Triple-Threat Week in Rock Island
Augustana completed a three-win stretch to improve to 10-9 overall and 5-2 in conference matches. The Vikings opened the run with a 6-1 league victory over Illinois Wesleyan last Thursday in Rock Island. They followed with a 5-2 win over Carroll on Saturday, as Santiago Lazo, Facundo Feldman, Aingeru Garcia and Grant Meyers secured singles victories in the Nos. 3 through 6 positions.

Augustana closed the week on Sunday with a 7-0 non-conference shutout of Loras. The doubles teams of Garcia and Jorge Marcelo, along with Meyers and Lazo, helped set the tone by contributing to doubles sweeps in all three matches.

Decatur Duels: The Mid-Table Shuffle
Millikin and Illinois Wesleyan met Tuesday in Decatur, where the Big Blue earned a 6-1 victory. Millikin swept all three doubles matches and won five of the six singles contests. Matthew Kordesh produced one of the day’s more notable individual results at No. 2 singles, rebounding from a 6-0 opening-set defeat to win 6-2, 12-10. Illinois Wesleyan’s lone point came from senior Ben Vigneri, who won a three-set match over Gillian Nahum.

Vigneri had also led the Titans to their first conference victory of the season on Monday in a 7-0 shutout of Elmhurst, where he posted a 6-0, 6-1 decision at No. 1 singles. Millikin moved to 12-7 overall and 3-3 in conference play with the win.

Uphill Battles: Testing the Limits against the Elite
Wheaton and Carroll both faced matches against the conference’s top teams during the week. Wheaton dropped a 7-0 decision to No. 29 Carthage last Saturday and then fell 5-2 to No. 31 North Central on Tuesday. David Hill accounted for both points against the Cardinals, winning at No. 2 doubles and No. 4 singles.
