Women's Track & Field Notebook: Top Marks and Team Finishes Set Stage for Kenosha

NAPERVILLE — As the women’s outdoor track & field season moves toward the conference championship portion of the schedule, College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) student-athletes continue to post nationally relevant results across multiple events.

Performances over the last week included a national-leading throw, top-10 marks, program records and several strong team finishes as programs prepared for the final weekend of regular-season competition.

A Discus Record for the Ages
On Wednesday, the conference office named Augustana senior Charlotte Frere and Illinois Wesleyan senior Adriana Crabtree the CCIW Women’s Outdoor Track & Field Student-Athletes of the Week. Frere turned in one of the top throws in Division III history at the Augustana Meet of Champions last Friday, improving her national-leading discus mark to a lifetime-best 53.92 meters. The performance ranks second in NCAA Division III history and also earned her USTFCCCA Division III National Athlete of the Week honors.

Crabtree recorded a season-best time of 10:33.93 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the Bryan Clay Invitational in Azusa, Calif., missing her own school record by less than a second while moving to fourth on the national list.

McCully Stadium Hosts an Old Fashioned Affair
Elmhurst, North Central and Wheaton met Wednesday at Wheaton’s McCully Stadium for the Old Fashioned Track Meet. Elmhurst finished first in the women’s team standings with 82 points, followed by North Central with 75 and Wheaton with 44.

Wheaton’s Allison Roozeboom won both the discus at 36.81 meters and the shot put at 12.33 meters, while teammate Clodagh O’Bryant added victories in the 800-meter run at 2:22.40 and the 3,000-meter steeplechase at 11:22.50. North Central’s Lily Anderson also posted an event win, taking the 5,000-meter run in 18:53.66.

Vaulting Toward the National Podium
North Central’s Gwen Berenyi continued to lead the conference in the pole vault, winning the event at the Wake Forest Invitational last Saturday with a clearance of 4.03 meters, a mark that ranks second in Division III this season. The Cardinals added further depth in the event Wednesday when Caroline Kuttner cleared a personal-best 3.70 meters, moving into 24th nationally and ninth in program history.

At the Don Church Twilight Meet last Saturday, North Park’s Julia Klein placed second with a clearance of 3.40 meters, while Carroll’s Jenna Weis won the pole vault at the Warrior Invite and teammate Ella Ott also contributed points in the event.

Pioneers Display Depth in the Badger State
Carroll recorded a second-place team finish at the Warrior Invite last Saturday with 211.5 points, trailing only Division I Marquette. The Pioneers were led by Grace Pequignot, who won both the shot put and hammer throw, and by Caroline Plasil, who took first in the javelin.

Carroll also won the 4x400-meter relay with Tirzah Losos, Cadence Carlson, Rianna Schultz and Hana Smith, and that performance currently ranks 70th nationally. Additional scoring efforts included a third-place finish in the 1,500-meter run from Kyla Laabs and a third-place finish in the 5,000-meter run from Natalie Parent.

Sprinting Into the National Conversation
Wheaton’s Heidi Krekelberg produced three event wins at the Don Church Twilight Meet last Saturday. She won the 100-meter dash in 12.00 seconds, a top-25 Division III mark, and later added a victory in the 200-meter dash at 25.29 seconds. Krekelberg also ran on Wheaton’s winning 4x100-meter relay, which finished in 48.58 seconds.

North Park’s Chloe Chesser posted a personal-best 12.56 seconds in the 100-meter dash to place sixth, while North Central’s Alivia Henkel won the 400-meter hurdles for the second straight week with a time of 1:03.62 at Augustana.

Firebirds Find Their Rhythm in the Field
Carthage placed third at the Don Church Twilight Meet with 152.5 points and used the weekend to improve several national qualifying positions. Jackie Tuzil won the discus with a throw of 43.86 meters, which ranks eighth in Division III. Madison Payne added a first-place finish in the hammer throw at 46.82 meters and also placed fifth in the shot put with a season-best 13.57 meters, a mark that ranks 11th nationally. Christina Hall won the long jump at 5.50 meters, while Mara TenBrink finished second in the triple jump with a mark of 10.94 meters.

Distance Milestones on the West Coast
Illinois Wesleyan’s Mackenzie Huber reached a significant milestone at the Bryan Clay Invitational last Friday, finishing as the top Division III runner in the 800-meter race with a personal-best time of 2:10.49. The result moved her into second place in program history and into the national top 10.

Augustana’s Rosa de Lima Arroyo won the 10,000-meter run at the Augustana Meet of Champions in 45:49.22, while North Central freshman Dylan Moeller set a new freshman record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 11:13.28. That mark leads the conference and ranks 29th in Division III.
